As battery technology continues to improve, electric motorcycles have now become a serious option for your next bike. The range the bikes can travel before needing to recharge is 29kms to 72kms on the base model.
Charging times are 2hrs for a 95% charge, or 9hrs for a full charge 0.1c p/km, a fraction of the cost of fuel.
Zero motorcycles are currently leading the way in electric bike technology and they offer a number of on road and off road options. One of the most appealing things about the Zero electric motorcycles is the lower maintenance costs.
With no petrol engine, there is no need for oil, air filters, oil filters, gaskets or need to rebuild the engine. The initial purchase price is still significant starting from $19,000 for the 2016 Zero FXS 6.5 Supermotoup to $26,500 for the 2016 Zero DSR 13.0 Max Adventure. You can check out pricing on Redbook.
The most intruging aspect to the Zero bikes is that they are virtually silent. At first this can be off putting, but when doing off road rides, they offer the ability to experience the bush in a new way. Wildlife is not scared of by loud engines, and neighbors are not even aware you are in the area.
Zero motorcycles are not aiming to replace traditional bikes, but they certainly add something unique to the riding experience.
